The railroad came to Belmond in 1881. Thanks to Larry Severson, on display is a 1948 toy train set. Visit the museum to view the train set and railroad items.
Upon retiring from The Belmond Independent, long-time Belmond resident Bob Foss took it upon himself to take boxes full of photographs that the newspaper had collected over the years and create what has come to be a favorite exhibit at the Belmond Museum. The photographs were mounted in three 2 ft by 1-1/2 ft volumes with over 800 pages of images and donated to the museum by the Foss family.
The Belmond Historical Society has recently contracted with a Lacrosse-based company to fully digitize all three volumes. While the originals will remain on display for viewing, this initiative has made it possible for visitors to obtain copies of pictures that are of particular interest to them.

Everyone is strongly encouraged to visit the Museum and appreciate the result of Bob’s hard work and also see if there is an image they would like take home.
The 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into WW I will be commemorated in 2017. The Belmond Historical Society would like to honor the men and women who served their country from the Belmond Area. We would ask your help in finding photos and service history information of anyone you know of who served. The information & photos may be dropped off at the museum or emailed to BelmondHistory@gmail.com. If you would like your photo and information returned to you, please let us know and we will be happy to do so.
We would like to thank everyone who came to our open house Friday Oct.14th. We can’t say enough about how pleased we were with the turn out! In the morning we had the 5th graders from Belmond Klemme visit and they were perfect ladies and gentleman. They asked a lot of good questions and everyone on our staff really enjoyed talking to them. Then in the afternoon we had approximately 75-100 people attend and many of them were survivors of that day. It was really exciting to see and talk to people some of us hadn’t seen in 50 years! Even though it was a traumatic day all of us experienced we hope everyone who attended had as good a day as we did reminiscing . Hope to see you all again!!
